One, two, three, four
Things
that make us different,
Five, six,
seven, eight
Characteristics
that separate us.
Hair,
skin, eyes, gender
Features
that distinguish us
Class,
education, family, religion
Factors
that make our identities
One
important reason to not fall
Into the
pit of prejudice:
The
humanity that binds us
Is born
from our differences.
One, two,
three, four
Things
that hold us together,
Five, six,
seven, eight
Characteristics
that transcend appearances.
Heart, soul,
spirit, mind
Features
connecting humankind,
Love,
friendship, acceptance, possibility,
Factors
that strengthen our bond
Shallow
reasons drive a
Deep stake
between
Relationships
that are
Forced to
fail
Before
they flourish.
Unity has
faded,
Leaving
behind the sad remembrance
Of the
great people
Who starve
to find acceptance
There we
stand in the shadows
Of our own
making,
Looking to
the light
Cast by
their legacies
One, two,
three, four
Martin
Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Diane Nash.
One goal
that they worked towards:
Acceptance
of the diversity that brings us together.
And yet, one of our presidential candidates seems only too eager to "drive a deep stake between." He's got plenty of followers who thrive on hatred and exclusion. What are they scared of?
