Fruits of the MLK Diversity Poetry Writing Event

Students, staff, and faculty tutor children, write cards to service men and women, serve at Gleaner’s Food Bank, or participate in other service projects during the MLK Week of Service. Sponsored by the Office of Student Life, MLK Week rolls around every January.

On one afternoon during this week, the Writing Center stakes out the southwest corner of the Take 5 Lounge to offer a Diversity Poetry Writing event. We supply examples of different types of poetry as well as prompts that address Martin Luther King, Jr., and diversity issues.

This year, Writing Center Tutors Tess Wenderski and Justin Micallef staffed the poetry table and drew a number of prose and poetry writers. Many of them wrote about the lasting legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.; others hoped for an end to racial discord; and others shared stories of finding hidden treasures behind familiar faces.

Enjoy the following submissions, written on Monday, January 18, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., and all that he stands for. You’ll be gratified to see that hope and idealism still thrive at Madonna University.
