Emergence, by Tess Wenderski and Jackie Castellese

Context: “This watercolor was created by Josef Sapcaru, a Belgian Jew and a prisoner of Auschwitz Ill-Monowitz. The painting was a birthday present for Elzbleta Stawowy, a civilian worker who received it in 1944 from Josef Sapcaru, and two fellow prisoners, Alfred Erlich and Max Lezansky. In secret, she used to help them by providing food.”

Beauty emerged from
The ashes of suffering
Pain seen through their eyes.

  1. Nicely written haiku, Tess and Jackie. And the prisoners must have been starved for beauty.
