We, by Justin Micallef

What does it mean when one says “we”?
Does it mean our immediate environment, our peers,
Our friends,
Our family?

Is “we” synonymous with unity,
One group, one people
(under God
with liberty and justice
for all)?

What “Royal We” does one subscribe to and follow,
In that context of unity
That of themselves?

Who do we exclude from “we”?
Whose hand don’t we shake in church and school,
And proceed to push from
“We, the people”?

  1. "We" is kind of a qualified pronoun, isn't it, Justin? Too often we use it to stand apart from "they." -- These are evocative questions.
